Bushy Park in Teddington, Middlesex is a royal Deer Park. Red and Fallow Deer still roam freely throughout the park, just as they did when Henry VIII used to hunt here.
This large Red Stag was photographed during the autumn 'rut' (breeding season). This particular male had just spent the last few hours roaring, barking and clashing antlers in a spectacular way in an attempt to fight off rivals and attract as many females as possible.
Taking solice in his victory he takes a well needed rest in the tall grass, illuminated by the afternoon sun, recouperating energy to continue the long battle for dominance.
